To celebrate AAPI Heritage Month and Mother’s Day, Alzheimer’s Care Services (CaringKind) recently held a medical lecture and volunteer recognition event at the Flushing Library to express gratitude to the team for their dedication over the past year. At the same time, well-known neurologists are invited to give lectures on how to identify early symptoms and how to care for patients.

There were multiple interactive booths at the event, with the co-organizer CAIPA (Coalition of Asian-American IPA) and several health insurance organizations providing information on dementia prevention and care, as well as displaying a variety of medical tools and resources. During this period, nearly a hundred elders present not only shared their personal experiences with each other, but also many volunteers were present to provide counseling and support.

Weijing Shi, Vice President of Diversified Services at Care Services, said that holding the celebration during Asian Month is of special significance because there are also holidays such as Mother’s Day during the month, making the event not only a cultural celebration but also a tribute to family. She emphasized that by combining festivals with health education, the community’s understanding of geriatric diseases such as dementia can be more effectively raised, and family members can be encouraged to actively participate in the care process.

Because Care Services has provided free care services for dementia patients for a long time, Shi Weijing also presented commendations on behalf of volunteers Li Mingdong, Rosa, Cui Xiaoxin, Tan Xiaoyi, Chen Fengzhang, Liang Ziyun, Huang Luo Meilan, Quan Yanping and Zhang Chaoqun. In addition, there will be cultural performances such as traditional Chinese song and dance performances at the event.

At the same time, the care service also invited Dr. Annie Wu, a neurologist under CAIPA, to introduce the prevention and treatment methods of dementia. Dr. Wu said that the number of patients with dementia in the United States now reaches 6.5 million, and this number is expected to continue to grow. She pointed out that due to the aging of the population, dementia has become a major issue affecting public health, so the whole society needs to take joint action.

Dr. Wu also introduced some preventive measures, including maintaining cardiovascular health, actively managing chronic diseases, maintaining social interaction, and engaging in brain-challenging activities.
